an American who won three Olympic gold medals. Two were for the heptathlon (= an event involving seven separate contests) in 1988 (when she scored more points than any other competitor has ever done) and 1992. Her third gold medal was for the long jump in 1988. Her sister-in-law was Florence Griffith Joyner .
