( Horatio Herbert Kitchener 1850–1916)
a British soldier who commanded the army in the Sudan (1883–5), in South Africa during the Boer War (1900–02) and in India (1902–9). At the beginning of World War I he became Secretary of State for war and was responsible for encouraging more men to join the army. He appeared on a famous poster telling people ‘Your country needs you.‘ He was made an earl (1) in 1914 and died at sea during World War I .
