a region of lakes and mountains in Cumbria, north-west England. It contains the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike , and the largest lake, Windermere (1). Other lakes include Ullswater and Derwentwater . The area is associated with the Lake Poets , who lived there and wrote about it. It was later the home of the writers John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter . Its beautiful scenery is very popular with tourists, and it was made a national park in 1951.
