Meaning of LANCASTER in English

I . Lancaster

a city in Lancashire (1), England, on the River Lune. John of Gaunt became Duke of Lancaster in 1362, and since 1399 the Duchy of Lancaster has been a possession of the British Crown . The Lancastrians in the Wars of the Roses were supporters of the royal house descended from John of Gaunt.

II . Burt Lancaster

(1913–94)

a US actor who was a Hollywood star in the 1950s and 1960s. He began his career as a circus acrobat. He was known for playing strong characters and for his big smile. Lancaster won an Oscar for Elmer Gantry (1960). Among his other films were From Here to Eternity (1953), Trapeze (1956), The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), The Leopard (1963), Atlantic City (1980), Local Hero (1983) and Field of Dreams (1989).

III . the House of Lancaster

the English royal house (= family) descended from John of Gaunt , Duke of Lancaster, which ruled England from 1399 to 1461. The three kings of the House of Lancaster were Henry IV , Henry V and Henry VI . During the rule of Henry VI, the Wars of the Roses began between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists , which resulted in the creation of a new royal house, the House of York (1461–85).

IV . Osbert Lancaster

(1908–86)

an English cartoonist and writer. His ‘pocket cartoons’ (= small funny drawings ) appeared in the Daily Express newspaper from 1939 onwards, and were popular for characters such as the upper-class Lady Maudie Littlehampton. He also wrote books on architecture and did designs for the theatre. He was made a knight in 1975.
