a British film maker who makes film about the lives of ordinary people and the social and economic problems they face. His early work was for television, and included plays such as Up the Junction (1965) and Cathy Come Home (1966). His later films made for the cinema have included Kes (1969), Raining Stones (1993), My Name is Joe (1998), Bread and Roses (2000) and Sweet Sixteen (2002).
