a character in stories about the American Wild West who spends his life preserving justice and fighting those who do wrong. He wears a mask and rides a white horse called Silver. His Native-American friend Tonto calls him ‘Kemo Sabe’ (which means ‘trusty scout’). Together they defeated many outlaws (= criminals). Fran Striker created the character for a US radio series (1933–54) and then wrote 17 Lone Ranger novels. The Lone Ranger was also a popular television series (1949–57), with Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger.
