The capital city is Augusta and the largest city is Portland. Maine was separated from Massachusetts in 1820 as a free state under the Missouri Compromise . It is a popular area for outdoor holidays and sports, and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail begins there. Maine’s products include paper, apples, blueberries and canned sardines (= small fish).
