a Scottish runner in long distance races. She won the gold medal for the 10 000 metres at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 and 1990 and at the World Championships in 1991. She also won the silver medal in the same event at the Olympic Games in 1988. In 1991 she started to compete in marathon races (= ones run over a long distance) and won the first one she entered, the New York marathon. She has also won the London marathon .
