a leading English actor known especially for his performances in Shakespeare plays, although he has appeared in many other plays and in a number of films including the Lord of the Rings films, in the role of Gandalf. He is also known for his efforts to raise money for the victims of the disease AIDS and for his campaigns in support of equal rights for homosexuals. He was made a knight in 1991.
