a member of a Protestant group, mostly in Canada and the US, who have a simple life and religion like the Amish and the Hutterites . Their rules come from the Bible, and they only baptize adults. They also refuse to hold public office or serve in the armed forces. The Mennonites came to the US from Switzerland in 1683 and settled mainly in Pennsylvania and the Middle West . They named themselves after Menno Simons, a 16th-century Dutch Anabaptist leader.
