a US city and port in south-eastern Florida on Biscayne Bay. It is a popular place for holidays because of the warm weather and Miami Beach , which is on an island three miles off the coast. The city is also an important financial and industrial centre. It became a town in 1892 and grew rapidly in the 1920s. Many immigrants live in the districts of ‘Little Havana’ and ‘Little Haiti’. More than half of Miami’s population are Hispanic .
