a US writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for Tales of the South Pacific (1947) based on his experiences there. It was adapted as the musical play and film South Pacific . Michener then mainly wrote historical and adventure novels, most of them very long and based on careful research. They include The Bridges of Toko-Ri (1953), Hawaii (1959), Centennial (1974), Chesapeake (1978) and Alaska (1988). Several of his books were filmed.
