the home of US President Thomas Jefferson , on a hill near Charlottesville, Virginia . Jefferson himself designed it in the neoclassical style, and it was completed in 1809. He lived there for 56 years and is buried there. It became a National Shrine in 1926 and a World Heritage Site in 1987. The image of Monticello is on one side of the US nickel (= 5-cent coin) and Jefferson’s head is on the other side.
