a US tennis player in the 1920s and 1930s who was the best woman player of her time. Her popular name was ‘Queen Helen’. She won eight Wimbledon competitions (1927–30, 1932–3, 1935 and 1938), which remained a record for 52 years. Her total of 31 competition victories included the US Open (2) seven times and the French Open four times. She also won a Gold Medal at the 1924 Olympics. Before she was married in 1929, she played as Helen Wills. She was chosen for the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1959.
