I . Herbert Morrison
(1888–1965)
a British Labour Party politician who held several senior government positions. As Minister of Transport, he established London Transport (now Transport for London ) in 1931. During World War II , he was Home Secretary and from 1945 to 1951 he was Leader of the House of Commons. He was Foreign Secretary for a short period in 1951 and deputy leader of the Party from 1951 to 1955.
II . Jim Morrison
(1943–71)
a US singer who led the rock group The Doors . He led a wild life involving too much sex, drugs and alcohol, and was arrested several times. He left the band in 1971 to live in Paris and died there in his bath, though some people believe he is still alive.
III . Toni Morrison
(1931– )
a US woman writer, the first African American to win a Nobel Prize (in 1993). She studied at Harvard University and has taught there as well as at Princeton and Yale Universities. Her novels are mostly about African-American life in the southern countryside. They include The Bluest Eye (1970), Song of Solomon (1977), Beloved (1987), which won the Pulitzer Prize , Jazz (1992) and Paradise (1998).
IV . Van Morrison
(1945– )
a Northern Irish singer and writer of songs who has been popular since the 1960s. His first album, Astral Weeks (1968), is still regarded as one of the best popular music albums ever produced. His music has used influences from Celtic culture, blues , gospel music, jazz and country music and he is considered to have a very individual style.
