( born Louis Mountbatten 1900–79)
a British admiral who during World War II commanded the Allied forces in South-East Asia. He was the last viceroy of India before it became independent, and remained there for a year as its first Governor General. He was killed while sailing off the west coast of Ireland by a bomb put on his boat by the IRA . Lord Mountbatten was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria , and the uncle of Prince Charles . He became an earl (1) in 1947.
