( in full the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People )
a US organization that supports the rights of African Americans . It was formed in 1909 and played an important part in the civil rights movement . One of its major achievements was to bring a legal case which led to the US Supreme Court’s decision in 1954 against segregation in schools. Its main office is in Baltimore , Maryland , and it had more than 500 000 members in 2003.
