( in England and Wales ) any member of a Protestant Church which does not follow the beliefs and practices of the Church of England . For example, members of the Baptist , Methodist , and Presbyterian Churches, or of the United Reformed Church , are all Nonconformists. Members of independent groups such as the Quakers , the Plymouth Brethren , and the Salvation Army are also referred to as Nonconformists. In Scotland, where the Presbyterian Church is the official one, members of any other church, including members of the Church of England , are considered Nonconformists.
