( also Ojibway , Chippawa , Chippaway ) n ( pl -was/-ways or -wa/-way )

a member of a Native-American people who speak the Algonquin language. About 100 000 live on reservations (= land given and protected by the government) in the US states of Michigan , Wisconsin and Minnesota , and in Ontario, Canada. They once lived mostly around Lake Superior and Lake Huron , where they were farmers who also hunted. The Ojibwas often fought with the Sioux .
