a US actor who usually plays tough characters. He won an Oscar for his part in Scent of a Woman (1992). He began his career on stage before becoming famous for his performances as Michael Corleone in the three Godfather films. His other films have included Serpico (1973), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Scarface (1983), Heat (1992), Looking for Richard (1996), which he also produced and directed, and the The Insider (1999). He also starred in the television series Angels in America (2003).
