I . Paisley
a town in western Scotland, near Glasgow ,with a long tradition of producing clothes and fabrics in wool and cotton. It became well known in the 19th century when the paisley pattern was introduced. It is a design like a feather or teardrop (= a single tear) with a curved end which originally came from India and became popular around the world after it was used for cloth and shawls made in Paisley:
a paisley tie.
II . Ian Paisley
(1926– )
a Northern Irish religious and political leader, well known for his strong views against the IRA , the Republic of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Presbyterian minister (= priest) in 1946 and established his own religious group, the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, in 1951. He established the Ulster Democratic Unionist Party in 1971, and has been its leader since 1974. He has been an MP since 1970 and an MEP since 1979. He often appears on British television expressing his opinion that Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom .
