Meaning of POPE in English

(1688–1744)

an English poet, well known for his humour and intelligence. He is considered the greatest poet of the Augustan Age . He gained his reputation as a major writer by translating Homer’s Iliad (1715–20) and Odyssey (1725–6), but is now better known for his satirical poems such as The Rape of the Lock and An Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot (1735) which made fun of the writers and fashionable people of the period.
