(1938– )
a British Labour politician. He began his career in the merchant navy before becoming a Member of Parliament in 1970. From 1994 to 1997 he was deputy leader of the Labour Party under Tony Blair , and became deputy Prime Minister after Labour’s victory in the 1997 general election.
