( in the US ) an examination that high school students take, mostly to practise for the SAT examination. It is sometimes called the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), because students who do well can receive money from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to attend a college or university.
