I . Pullman™

( pl -mans ) n

( especially formerly ) a comfortable railway carriage, often with beds for passengers to sleep in during journeys at night. It was developed by George Pullman (1831–1901) who built the Pioneer Sleeping Car in 1863 and formed the Pullman Palace Car Company in 1867. From 1985, British Rail applied the name ‘Pullman’ to its first-class carriages serving meals, drinks, etc.

II . Philip Pullman

(1946– )

an English writer of fantasy books for children. He is best known for His Dark Materials , a trilogy which includes Northern Lights (1995), The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000) which won the Whitbread Book of the Year award.
