I . Harold Robbins

(1916–97)

a US author of popular novels that contain a lot of sex and violence. More than 50 million copies of his books were sold and many of them were made into films. The best known is The Carpetbaggers (1961), which sold more than 6 million copies. Others include Never Love a Stranger (1948), A Stone for Danny Fisher (1952), The Betsy (1971), Piranha (1986) and The Stallion (1996).

II . Jerome Robbins

(1918–98)

a US dancer and choreographer. He joined the New York City Ballet in 1949 and was later one of its Ballet Masters-in-Chief (1983–9). His ballets included Fancy Free (1944), which he helped to adapt for the film On the Town (1949). He was the choreographer for several Broadway musical plays, including The King and I (1951), West Side Story (1957) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964).
