I . Anne Robinson

(1944– )

an English journalist and broadcaster who is the presenter of the television quiz show The Weakest Link . She behaves in a very critical and unfriendly way towards the people who take part.

II . Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson

(1878–1949)

a US actor and tap-dancer (= a dancer who wears special shoes to beat out the rhythm on the floor). He is best remembered for appearing in films with Shirley Temple , including The Little Colonel (1935), The Littlest Rebel (1935) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938).

III . Edward G Robinson

(1893–1973)

a US actor, born in Romania, who was best known for playing tough criminals in films. His films include Little Caesar (1930), The Last Gangster (1938), Double Indemnity (1944), All My Sons (1948), The Cincinnati Kid (1965) and Solvent Green (1973). Robinson received a special Oscar in 1972.

IV . Jackie Robinson

(1919–1972)

a US baseball player, the first African-American in either of the two US major leagues (= associations of teams). He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947–56) and was Most Valuable Player for the National League in 1949. In 1962 he was chosen for the National Baseball Hall of Fame .

V . Robert Robinson

(1927– )

an English radio and television presenter, especially of quiz shows. His programmes for television have included Ask the Family (1967–84) and Call My Bluff (1967–88), and for radio Stop the Week (1974–92) and Brain of Britain .

VI . ‘Smokey’ Robinson

(1940– )

a US singer and writer of songs, born William Robinson. His pop group, ‘Smokey’ Robinson and The Miracles (1957–72), had hits with Shop Around (1960), You’ve Really Got a Hold of Me (1962) and The Tears of a Clown (1970). He then began singing alone, and had success with Cruisin’ (1979), Being with You (1981) and One Heartbeat (1987). Robinson was Vice-president of Motown Records until 1988.

VII . ‘Sugar’ Ray Robinson

(1920–89)

a US boxer who many people regard as the greatest of all time. He was the World Welterweight Champion (1946) and then the only person to become World Middleweight Champion five times. During his career, he lost only 19 of his 202 professional fights.
