a Northern Irish political party, formed in 1970 by a group of MPs in favour of equal rights for Roman Catholics . The party, supported mainly by Catholics, would like Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to be united as one country, but does not approve of the violent methods of the IRA . Its MPs in the House of Commons vote the same way as the Labour Party on most issues.
