a US singer who has been called ‘the father of the American folk revival’. He plays the guitar and banjo and has written many folk songs (= traditional songs of the people). He first formed and sang with the Weavers (1949–52). Seeger’s successful songs of protest have included If I Had a Hammer (1949), Where Have All the Flowers Gone (1956) and We Shall Overcome .
