an English football player known for his strength and speed and his ability to score goals. He played for Southampton (1988–92) and Blackburn Rovers (1992–6), and in 1996 he was bought by Newcastle United for £15 million, the largest sum ever paid for a player at the time. He played regularly for the England team from 1992 to 2000 and then retired from the game.
