a major battle of the American Civil War , fought on 6–7 April 1862 at Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee . It was won by the US Army, led by General Ulysses S Grant , after they had been forced back on the first day. More than 10 000 soldiers were killed or wounded on both sides. The victory helped Grant to take control of the Mississippi River . The battle was named after Shiloh Church, a small Methodist church near where it was fought.
