1. ( in Britain ) a government law officer who acts as the Attorney General’s main assistant. The Solicitor General is a lawyer and an MP belonging to the ruling party, who advises the government on legal matters.

2. ( in the US government ) the law officer who is next in rank to the US Attorney General . Some states also have a Solicitor General as the main assistant to the state Attorney General.
