a US writer of Broadway musical plays, many of which have been made into films. He wrote the words for West Side Story and Gypsy (1959), and the words and music for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Company (1970), A Little Night Music (1973) and Sweeney Todd (1979). Sunday in the Park with George (1984) won the Pulitzer Prize . His best-known song is probably Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music .
