(1854–1932)
a US composer, also known as the ‘March King’. He wrote about 140 works of music for military marches, including Semper Fidelis (1888), The Washington Post (1889) and The Stars and Stripes Forever (1897). He led the US Marine Band (1880–92) and then formed his own band which made tours of Europe and around the world. The sousaphone , a large brass musical instrument, was named after him.
