(1841–1904)
a Welsh journalist and explorer. He went to live in the US in 1859, and worked as a journalist for the New York Herald . In 1869 he was sent by his newspaper to find the explorer David Livingstone , who was thought to have become lost in Africa. Stanley found him at Ujiji in 1871, and is said to have greeted him with the words ‘Dr Livingstone, I presume?’ Stanley continued to explore Africa until the early 1890s, and returned to live in Britain in 1892. He became a Member of Parliament (1895–1900) and was made a knight in 1899.
