I . Jackie Stewart
(1939– )
a Scottish racing driver who was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. He won 27 Grand Prix races and was Formula One world champion three times. He was made a knight in 2001.
II . James Stewart
(1908–97)
a popular US actor who usually played good, honest characters. He was a tall man, known for speaking in a slow and hesitating way. He won an Oscar for The Philadelphia Story (1940) and a special Oscar in 1984 for his contribution to the film industry. His other films include It’s a Wonderful Life , Rear Window (1954), The Glenn Miller Story (1954), The Man from Laramie (1955), The Spirit of St Louis (1957) and The Shootist (1986). Stewart was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II and was later a Brigadier General in the US Air Force Reserve.
III . Martha Stewart
(1941– )
a US television personality known for cookery, gardening and home decoration. Through the company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia she runs television programmes, magazines and a website and sells several ranges of household products. In 2004 she was found guilty of several offences related to her business and financial dealings.
IV . Rod Stewart
(1945– )
an English pop singer. He is well known for his rough voice and for his love of Scotland, from where his family originally came. He has recorded many famous songs, including Maggie May (1971) and Sailing (1975). Since the 1970s he has lived mainly in the US. His songs were made into a musical called Tonight’s the Night .
