I . A J P Taylor

( Alan John Percivale Taylor 1906–90)

a leading English historian. He wrote many books and newspaper articles about the history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, and became famous in Britain when he appeared on television to explain events such as the Russian revolution.

II . Elizabeth Taylor

(1932– )

a US actor, born in England. She began her career as a child star in films that included National Velvet (1944). Two of her eight marriages were to Richard Burton (III), and their films together included Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? , for which she received an Oscar . They also acted together in the Broadway play The Little Foxes (1981). Taylor’s other films include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and Butterfield 8 (1960), for which she won another Oscar . She was made a dame (2) in 2000.

III . Zachary Taylor

(1784–1850)

the 12th US President (1849–50). He was an army officer known as ‘Old Rough and Ready’ who fought in the War of 1812 and in the Mexican War , in which he defeated General Santa Anna . Taylor owned slaves but as President supported California as a new state without slaves.
