Meaning of THORPE in English

I . Jeremy Thorpe

(1929– )

a British politician who was the leader of the Liberal Party (now called the Liberal Democratic Party ) from 1967 to 1976. He resigned when a former male model called Norman Scott claimed in public that they had had a homosexual relationship. In 1979 Thorpe and three others were tried and found not guilty of having planned to murder Scott, but the scandal ended his political career. He was a Member of Parliament from 1959 to 1979.

II . Jim Thorpe

(1888–1953)

a US athlete who is widely regarded as the greatest of the 20th century. He was the first to win both the decathlon and pentathlon events at the Olympic Games (in 1912). He later played professional baseball (1913–19) and professional football (1917–29). He was chosen for the Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
