a US writer of humorous stories who also drew comic drawings for them. They are often about men and women defeated by the ordinary problems of life. From 1927, most of his best work was published in the The New Yorker magazine. His collections of stories include My World and Welcome to It (1942), which contains his best-known story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty . See also Mitty .
