any of the awards given in the US each spring by the American Theater Wing to the best Broadway plays, actors and other professional theatre people. The Tonys began in 1947 and are named after Antoinette (‘Tony’) Perry (1888–1946) who produced and directed Broadway plays, and established the American Theater Wing in 1941.
