an adventure story by Robert Louis Stevenson , popular especially with children and published in 1883. The hero of the book is Jim Hawkins, a boy who finds a map of an island where some treasure is buried. He joins a group of sailors on a ship called Hispaniola and they set off to search for it. One of the best-known characters in the book is Long John Silver , a pirate (= a person who robs ships at sea) with one leg, and a parrot (= a colourful bird) that sits on his shoulder. The story has been adapted for the stage and television, and there have been several film versions.
