(1931– )
a famous English cricket player. He was a fast bowler who played for Yorkshire (1949–68) and for England (1952–65). He was known for his aggressive attitude as a player, as a result of which he was sometimes called ‘Fiery Fred’ and he was often in trouble with the cricket authorities. He was the first bowler in the history of the game to take 300 wickets in test matches (= international matches). Since he stopped being a player he has appeared regularly on the radio programme Test Match Special . His honest views often involve criticizing players and those in charge of the game, and he is regarded both with affection and amusement by people who follow cricket in Britain.
