a US film company started in 1919 by Mary Pickford , Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D W Griffith . It was the first Hollywood company to allow actors to be independent. Its successful films included The Gold Rush , Scarface (1932), The African Queen (1951), High Noon (1953), Some Like It Hot (1959), The Magnificent Seven (1960), the James Bond films of the 1960s, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Rocky (1976) and Rain Man (1988). In 1981 the company became part of MGM .
