Meaning of VALEDICTORIAN in English

a student in a high school , college or university who gives the valedictory (= goodbye speech) on the day when degrees are presented. The valedictorian is traditionally the student with the highest grades. Most schools also have a ‘salutatorian’, who has the next highest grades and gives the salutatory (= speech of welcome to the event).
