I . ‘Muddy’ Waters
(1915–83)
a US blues singer who played the guitar and wrote songs, often with a sexual theme. His powerful style influenced many other rock musicians. He first became famous with his song Rollin’ Stone (1950), a name later taken by the Rolling Stones group and the music magazine Rolling Stone . Waters formed a band in 1950, and his later hits included I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man (1954) and Got My Mojo Working (1957).
II . Sarah Waters
(1966– )
a Welsh writer of historical novels. Her first novel Tipping the Velvet (1998), deals with lesbian relationships in the 1890s. It was adapted by Andrew Davies for a BBC television drama in 2002. Her second novel, Affinity (1999) won the Somerset Maugham prize in 2000 and her third novel, Fingersmith won the CWA Historical Dagger Award (2002).
