an English writer known especially for the feminist themes of her novels. These have included The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (1983), which was made into a British television series and later a film. She caused controversy recently by accepting payment from a jewellery company to write a novel in which their products are mentioned ( The Bulgari Connection 2001) and by speaking in defence of men’s rights.
