a district in the East End of London. It once had a reputation as one of the poorest areas of central London, and many immigrants settled there. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries many Jewish people came to live in Whitechapel, and it still has many Jewish shops and businesses. It is also well known as the area where Jack the Ripper committed his murders.
