Meaning of WINCHESTER in English

I . Winchester

1. a city in southern England. It is the administrative centre of Hampshire and until Norman times was the capital of England. It is well known for its cathedral, which was begun in the 11th century, and other very old buildings.

2. ( also Winchester College ) a well-known public school (1) in Winchester. It was established by William of Wykeham in 1382 and was the first of its kind.

3. ( also Winchester rifle ) n a type of rifle developed in the US by Oliver F Winchester and first produced in 1860 by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. It was especially successful because it could be fired repeatedly without the need to put bullets in each time. Winchesters were widely used in the American Civil War and are often seen in western films.

a British journalist and writer who writes about travel and history. He was the foreign correspondent for The Guardian newspaper for 20 years and has also written for magazines such as National Geographic . His books include The Surgeon of Crowthorne (1998) (published in the US as The Professor and the Madman ), The Map That Changed The World (2001), The Meaning of Everything (2003) and Krakatoa (2003).
