( Thomas Wolsey c. 1474–1530)

an English cardinal (= very senior Roman Catholic priest), who was Henry VIII’s most important political adviser in the first half of his reign. Wolsey became very powerful, but was dismissed by Henry when he failed to get the Pope’s permission for the king to divorce Catherine of Aragon .
