I . Andrew Young

(1932– )

a leader in the US civil rights movement . He was a member of the US House of Representatives (1973–7) and the first African-American representative to the United Nations (1977–9) where he was known for his strong, open comments. He later became mayor of Atlanta (1982–9).

II . Brigham Young

(1801–77)

the US leader of the Mormons who brought them to Utah in 1846–7 and established Salt Lake City . He became the first Governor of the Utah Territory in 1850. He is believed to have had 27 wives.

III . ‘Cy’ Young

(1867–1955)

a famous US baseball player (1890–1911). He was a pitcher (= player who throws the ball to be hit) who played in more games (906) and had more wins (511) than any other player in the history of the game. His real name was Denton True Young. His nickname ‘Cy’ was a short form of ‘Cyclone’, a wind storm. He played for the Cleveland Indians, the St Louis Cardinals, the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Braves. He was chosen for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.

IV . Jimmy Young

(1923– )

a popular British radio broadcaster who had his own programme every morning from Monday to Friday on Radio 2 (1973–2002). It combined popular music and other entertainment with discussion of news items and interviews with politicians. Young began his career as a singer and he was also one of the original disc jockeys on Radio 1 when it was established in 1967. He was made a knight in 2002.

V . Whitney Young

(1921–71)

an African-American leader during the civil rights movement . He was head of the National Urban League (1961–70). Young was criticized by some African Americans because he made compromises with white political leaders, but he had great influence.
